Description

Nepal map series of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für vergleichende Hochgebirgsforschung e.V.

The well-known maps Khumbu Himal and Shorong/Hinku of the Nepal map series of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft für vergleichende Hochgebirgsforschung München have been updated, supplemented, improved and reissued in 2013. They cover a map area of 3250 km², which is bordered to the north by the Tibetan Highlands and to the south by the "Lesser Himalaya". The eastern boundary is formed by the 8485 meter high summit of Makalu, the western boundary by the Nangpa Glacier. Map users will not only find the famous Everest Trail from Nepal's Lukla Airport to Mt. Everest Base Camp or the main trekking route through the Hinku Valley to the easy-to-climb Mera Peak at over 6000 meters. Challenging routes from Mera Pass down and through the Hunku Valley to the north up to the Amphu Laptsa Pass and then on to Island Peak Base Camp are also depicted. Attractive routes in the south, e.g. to Junbesi, which run away from the great routes to the north, offer further alternatives.

Based on current terrain surveys and high-resolution satellite images, the settlement and route network as well as the glacier levels in the area of the glacier tongues have been updated and the map contents relevant for trekking tourism have been presented for the first time. Particular emphasis was placed on the complete mapping of hotels, lodges, campsites, monasteries and stupas etc. In addition, the trails were divided into main and secondary trekking trails based on the Nepalese mountain trail network. The map layout and the legend of the last editions made from 1985 and 1999 have been revised and are bilingual in German and English. For orientation with GPS devices, the maps have been georeferenced and converted to the Universal Transversal Mercator Projection (UTM) with the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84). The color scheme of the two adjacent sheets was adapted to each other, the glaciers were colored understated turquoise and the rock and debris depiction of the Shorong/Hinku map was redesigned for excellent differentiation. With their vivid depiction of the rock and terrain of the central Himalayas down to the smallest geomorphological detail and with all their up-to-date information, the two sheets are currently the most up-to-date and comprehensive trekking maps of the Nepalese Mt Everest region.

Shorong Hinku Map No. 5 | Edition 2013 | Scale 1:50,000 | waterproof and tearproof | bilingual German/English
